New Techniques: Painting on Photos

I had the idea to enhance the Ihi and Wehi of my work by physically manipulating it. In the case of my damp homes poster idea I thought this might allow me to create the shape of a house that is more easily seen than drawing in condensation. The way I thought I could do this is by printing out one of my photographs of condensation and painting a house on it before re-photographing it.

Shae Acopian Detar

"LA based artist Shae Acopian Detar has lately focused her aesthetic on film and digital photography with a reputation for her whimsical hand painted photos and antique processing."

Gerhard Richter:

"Gerhard Richter is known for a prolific and stylistically varied exploration of the medium of painting, often incorporating and exploring the visual effects of photography. “I like everything that has no style: dictionaries, photographs, nature, myself and my paintings,” he says. “Because style is violent, and I am not violent.” Richter introduced abstraction into his practice, and he has continued to move freely between figuration and abstraction, producing geometric “Colour Charts”, bold, gestural abstractions, and “Photo Paintings” of anything from nudes, flowers, and cars to landscapes, architecture, and scenes from Nazi history."

New Techniques: Getting Artwork Wet

I had the idea to enhance the Ihi and Wehi of my work by physically manipulating it.

One of the ways I thought I could do this is by printing out my photographs and getting them wet.
I looked to see if any artists had done this before; I didn't find anything totally similar - but I did find out that people put paintings out in the rain to make abstract art.

Interesting Find

While perusing the internet I came across this photograph of the band "The Who" which is similar to the photography I have been doing for this assignment (people wrapped in a flag).

More Research into Damp Housing in NZ

"Condensation indicates a lot of moisture in the house. It contributes to mould growth and it makes houses feel colder and makes them more difficult to heat."

"A damp home is hard to heat and can make you and your children sick. Damp homes are associated with increased numbers of doctor’s visits for respiratory problems such as asthma.

Dampness encourages mould and mildew, which can also harm your health. Damp homes also deteriorate more quickly and they’re uncomfortable to live in."

https://www.consumer.org.nz/articles/interior-maintenance-combating-dampness

"We admit more than 40,000 children a year [nationwide] with poverty- and housing-related illnesses, and children are dying due to poor-quality housing in New Zealand. That is not good enough. A just society would not tolerate that.

There are various reasons cold, damp houses are dangerous. Mould grows better in damp air; viruses survive longer on cold surfaces; cold stresses the immune system; blood thickens when it’s cold and is more likely to form plaques."
